摘要

In this papet, a preventive load control scheme for an ATM-based network is presented. The generation of feedback is based on measuring the link utilisation. Thus, it is robust against statistical traffic variations, and it may be used in integrated networks for connections with various traffic characteristics. The evaluation of feedback signals uses a dynamic threshold to detect overload conditions. By that, it ensures fair bandwidth sharing among best-effort sources, independently from the connections' round trip times. Thus, the scheme is applicable in ATM-LANs as well as in wide area BISDN. In combination with appropriate functions for load adaption, the dynamic threshold may also be used to enable any other proportion of bandwidth share among different connections according to special applications' needs. Therefore, the scheme may be used for various application types, for best-effort sources as well as e.g. for video transmission.
