The application of flight simulation training devices for flight crew training is nowadays a common practice that has changed the way of pilot training and is fully acceptable for the aviation authorities. For these FSTDs there exists a whole body of regulations, certification specifications and guidance material from governing bodies such as ICAO, FAA and EASA. However, the introduction of both new simulation technologies, such as virtual reality, for flight crew training and simulation devices for other aerospace training application beyond flight crew training is strongly limited by the current regulations. As a result aerospace training organizations cannot optimally leverage the potential benefits of new simulation technologies and applications. The Netherlands Aerospace Center NLR is currently involved in various verification and validation studies to demonstrate the training effectiveness of new simulation technologies and applications. The high-level objective of all these studies is to support the development of (alternative) qualification methods and guidance material that are acceptable for the aviation authorities, and could serve as a basis for future regulations. The paper high-lights the simulator qualification test guide, other guidance material and lessons-learned developed from one of these studies: the Training Offshore (TOFF) project for helicopter hoist operations training.
