HIGH SPEED MACHINING: EXPANDING THE BORDERS IN MACHINING OF ALUMINUM AND HARD STEEL

High Speed Machining (HSM) is a new field in machining manufacture. As any newtheoretical or practical developments are achieved, they can become a basis for new researchand progress in the field. Thus, by better understanding the complex process of HSM, we areable to implement this process in the machine shop. The purpose of this presentation is toprovide an overview on the subject. The concept of High Speed Machining is very complex,incorporating high speed spindles, advanced controls (with look ahead and splineinterpolation), new generation of cutters, new generation of machines (with high travel ratesand high accelerations and decelerations), new generation of holders (HSK, balanced holders,shrink holders), and so on. Following this overview, I will present a number of theoreticalissues that guided our research on high speed machining of aluminum and hard steel. Thiswill be followed by our results, showing successful high speed machining of 45-54 Rc hardsteel and very thin walls (2 mm thickness, 100 mm height) in aluminum.
