Professional Training of Medical Physicists in AFOMP - The Role of IOMP PRC

The increasing demand for medical physics services in both scope and quality in support of the rapidly expanding therapeutic and diagnostic radiology services is one of the challenges being faced by medical physicists in the AFOMP region. Recent surveys show that the majority of the medical physicists in this region are unhappy with the professional status of their profession and that there is a strong desire amongst them to implement a more structured training system for the trainees and a professional certification scheme for the qualified to improve the standard of practice in their profession. IOMP, the Professional Relations Committee (PRC) in particular, and AFOMP can play an important role in these issues, particularly in the provision of guidance and support for national member organizations to develop their own national infrastructure for education and training, professional certification, and continue professional development of medical physicists. IOMP can also help to coordinate/facilitate mutual support amongst member organizations in the training and certification processes, especially on sharing of expertise and training materials. IOMP PRC has started working on the preparation of guidance documents and the exploration of possibilities and options in certifying medical physicists.
