REVIEW OF PROGRESS IN BREEDING WITHERIANTHUS AR UNDINA CEUS IN HAINAN, CHINA

Erianthus arundinaceus clones are reputed to have high biomass, vigor, ratooning ability, tolerance to drought and water logging, as well as resistance to pests and diseases and other excellent traits. Despite the large genetic distance between Saccharum and Erianthus, verified genuine intergeneric Fi hybrids were successfully generated by our institute in 1995. Over the past 20 years, more than 500 progeny clones derived from E arundinaceus, ranging from BQ to BC5 generations, have been produced andselected. Chromosome recombination between Saccharum and Erianthus has been found in many clones. In the past five years, 300 flower spikes from 255 cross combinations were provided to 24 sugarcane research institutes in China. Thirteen clones were chosen and used extensively as parental clones based on their yield, sugar content, ratooning ability and disease resistance. Two clones, /km 07-71 (YCE07-71) and Yacheng 06-140 (YCE06-140) showed better performance than commercial standard clones and we expect to release these commercially in coming years.
