A TiAl_3/Al_2O_3 composite was fabricated by pressureless reactive melt infiltration of Al into a porous titanium oxide preform. The porous preform was produced by 3D printing using a powder blend of 86 wt.% TiO_2, 8 wt.% TiC, and 6 wt.% dextrin. After pyrolysized at 800 °C in N_2 and heat-treated at 1400 °C in Ar, the preform was composed of TiO_2, Ti_3O_5, Ti-2O_3, and TiC with an open porosity of 63 %. The preform microstructure was characterized by a bimodal pore size distribution with intra-agglomerate micropores and inter-agglomerate macropores. Al melt was infiltrated up to 1450 °C in a flowing Ar atmosphere, which reacted with the preform to form a dense TiAl_3/Al_2O_3 composite.
