The sintering and grain growth of the ceramic core of Ag-sheathed tapes during the early stages of the heat treatment has been investigated. Modifications of the ceramic grains morphology were found to occur as soon as the temperature reaches 700 deg C. A tentative explanation for the improvement of the (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x phase texture prior to the conversion of the precursor powders into the hgiher Tc(Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y phase is presented.
