In order to carry out an inverse analysis in geotechnical engineerign successfully, it is inevitable to obtian appropriate observation data that matches the objective of the inverse anlaysis. In this paper, the flow of information among the prior information, the observation and the prediction process are described by the information entropy proposed by Shanon. The informaiton entropy is used as a measure to evalaute alternative observation schemes whose final aim is to carry out n inverse analysis to obtain more reliable model parameter values for the prediction. The proposed method is illustrated by a numerical example, i.e. an embankment on soft clay ground.
