The feasibility of determining unbalance defects from synchrnous responses of a rotating shaft is investigated. Only practically available data, that are flexural displacements of the rotor at bearing locations, are needed in the proposed method. It is firstly assumed that motion of rotor journals relative to two known unbalance excitations is available to determine the linearised bearing characteristics, secondly that corresponding measured responses can be obtained before and after the unbalance change has occurred. A simple two-bearing rotor system with an added mass is considered: 15percent noisy data permit both correct localisation and identification of the defect.
