In this paper, an active control scheme is used to suppress the bending and torsional vibration modes of a flexible structure. The feedback controller is designed based on the H-infinity based optimal control theory. For this purpose, a flexible bridge tower structure is considered to control its first four vibration modes using static state feedback controller. A four DOF reduced order lumped parameter mass model is derived by neglecting high frequency vibration modes. Attempt has been made to reduce the unmodelled system uncertainties by placing the actuators and/or sensors in the node point of a neglected mode. This enables us to control the bridge tower without any influence of neglected vibration modes. The performance of the control scheme is verified both by simulation and experimental studies.
