Repair of Reflective Cracks in An Asphalt Overlays on PCC Pavements (10-Years Case Study)

Reflective cracks is one of the most serious distress types that commonly occur in an asphalt overlay of the cracked and damaged Jointed Portland Cement Concrete (JPCC) pavements. Under heavy traffic loads and the environmental effects, this type of damage is usually accelerated progressively and becomes extremely dangerous for the traffic safety. Therefore, it has become evident that a more costeffective and practical repair method is needed to overcome the problem of reflective cracking. This paper includes a review of the different techniques that are currently used for repair of reflective cracks in the asphalt overlays for PCC pavements. 10 - years case study for a developed technique for repair of these reflective cracks is also included. The developed method for repair of cracks and joints in the old pavement is primary based on a proper cleaning and filling them with a polymeric material. After completion of the filling process, the old pavement was overlaid with different hot asphalt concrete layers. The developed method exhibits valuable and economical procedures to eliminate the reflective cracks in the asphalt overlays for an old pavement.
