This paper presents a novel permanent magnet limited-angle torque motor (LATM) with moving coil which possesses the feature of small inertia, linear output characteristic and compact structure. To speed up the design process, a simple analytical technique is proposed to estimate the torque coefficient, moment of inertia, resistance, and electromechanical time constant. By optimizing the arc angle of circular segments of the coil, small electromechanical time constant can be achieved. The finite element analysis is then employed to validate the basic design. A prototype is manufactured of which the measured parameters agree well with theoretical analysis and simulation. The prominent control characteristic of the proposed LATM is verified by the experiment of a very simple linear control system based on conventional PID regulator.
