Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are increasingly used in high performance applications, controlling this motor require rotor position and magnet polarity at start up to avoid reverse rotation and spin the motor with heavy loads. Many techniques are proposed in the literature to estimate the Initial position and detect the magnetic polarity. Some of these techniques are quite simple and based on aligning the motor to known position and proceed with startup and other methods are based on high frequency signal injection. There is no detailed study available in the literature to compare the performance of various initial position estimation and magnet polarity detection methods. Objective of this work is to compare the state of art technologies and future trends on Initial rotor position estimation and magnet polarity detection methods.
