Polyamide superfine fibers were prepared from the bi-component fiber of polyamide-6 (hereinafter PA6) and alkali soluble polyester (hereinafter COPET). COPET is a kind of co-polyester that can be rapidly hydro-degraded in hot alkaline solution. PA6& COPET bi-component fiber was investigated to find out the kinetics of alkali hydrolysis of COPET and the effect of alkali hydrolysis on the structure and properties. From the results it is observed that weight loss increases linearly with treatment time and nonlinearly with alkali concentration and reaction temperature. A linear correlation exists between strength loss of the fiber and its weight loss. By alkali hydrolysis, surface hydrophility of the fabric is considerably improved. Attempts have been made to explain the results in terms of modifications in the surface characteristics of polyester fabrics.
