In Japan, development effort is focused on larger thermal power units in quest for maximal utilization of power station sites and economy of coal-fired thermal units. The world's largest tandem 2-pole, 60 Hz, 1000 MW turbine generator has been successfully manufactured and shipped to the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant, Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. The first 1000 MW machine is currently under the installation and is scheduled for commissioning in November of 2001. In the design stage, special attention was paid to higher operability and maintainability as well as higher reliability and performance. The combination of high efficiency and compact design technologies has achieved both a 25% reduction in weight per unit capacity and a guaranteed efficiency of 99.00% at full load. To ensure a sufficient safety margin. a newly developed rotor shaft of 1000 MPa and retaining rings of 1300 MPa for tensile strength were applied. This paper introduces established design and material technologies, and describes shop test results of the world's largest 60 Hz turbine generator.
