Economic rationalism may be aligned with developments in a "deep-holistic" approach to learning. Such an approach is perceived as the antithesis of technical rationalism in education. Against such a background, the paper explores the management of trade-offs between "deep" versus "holistic" educational approaches in engineering education for life-long learning.
