Addresses two important issues: resource reservation and flow control, for video transmissions in a loss-free and timely delivery way for VOD (video-on-demand) systems. For the first issue, we propose a semi-static resource reservation scheme, which attempts to utilize resources efficiently and maximize the number of clients being serviced concurrently. For the second issue, we propose a server-initiated flow control scheme, in which the traffic flow is controlled by the server alone, using historical video information; thus, no feedback messages from its downstream switches are needed. Our approach is evaluated under a wide range of parameters through extensive simulations driven by trace data from various MPEG video streams.
