Organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) have become very attractive for a variety of low-cost electronic applications such as smart cards, RF identification tags and flat panel displays. OTFTs have the inherent advantage that they can be processed at much lower temperatures than a-Si:H and poly-Si TFTs, making them compatible with inexpensive, lightweight, and flexible polymeric substrates. The integration of OTFTs with organic light emitting diodes or liquid crystals on polymeric substrates allows flexible active matrix displays. Recently, researchers at Philips Research Laboratories reported the first OTFT-driven liquid crystal display on a glass substrate. The authors report the first active matrix liquid crystal display fabricated using OTFTs on a flexible polymeric substrate.
