The authors compare the power spectral densities (PSD) of normal ECG's with six different categories of abnormal ECGs, using the Welch's averaged periodogram method. In the normal 12 lead ECG leads, peak power was in the range of 0.1074 to 3.1922 mv/sup 2//Hz for leads aVI and V2, and occurred in the frequency range of 1.5-4 Hz PSDs were negligible for frequencies <30 Hz. Significant differences (P>0.05) were observed in different frequency bands of normal and abnormal ECGs. These suggest that the total spectral energy and its distribution as a function of frequency, may contain important diagnostic information in the classification of normal and abnormal ECGs.
