The changing future of technology in work organizations: a late nineteenth century view

In 1988, Shoshanna Zuboff wrote "In The Age Of The Smart Machine: The Future Of Work And Power", in which she examined a variety of work methodologies. By examining how various work organizations utilize computers, she reiterated the power and potential of computing tools in the workplace. Since Zuboff's book was published, a variety of socioeconomic mechanisms continue to inhibit the promise and potential of computer technology and related other emerging technologies in ways that must be understood before we achieve, in Zuboff's words, a fully "informated" society. This paper attempts to explore and provide tentative solutions to these mechanisms.
