In this paper, we present a methodology aimed at providing a network controller with traffic characteristics pertinent to individual users applications. We start with a classification of source traffic in a broadband integrated network. Traffic is analyzed in terms of its constituent applications generated at a user's site. The classification criteria include different quality of service (QOS) measures such as delay, cell loss, and bandwidth requirements. Individual user applications can then be included in one of the proposed traffic classes. Traffic resulting from a combination of different classes is not itself a class. Analysis is then performed for individual applications and classes. Results are summarized in the form of a programmable useretwork traffic conversion table.
