Falls in the elderly lead to a loss of freedom, self-confidence, and mobility, as well as costly medical bills. Neutral position foot orthoses (NPFOs) are custom-made shoe inserts that relieve areas of pressure and biomechanically align a malaligned foot. If proved efficacious in improving standing stability, NPFOs could help minimize the probability of falls in the geriatric population. Many studies have been conducted regarding standing stability, however researchers have yet to agree on one parameter that efficiently determines standing stability (or instability) using a reasonably straight forward technique.
