We have tested the radio-frequency driven H/sup -/ source and have shown that the H/sup -/ production efficiency and the beam emittance are similar to those obtained from the filament discharge. Typically the numbers are 2.8 mA/cm/sup 2kW and 0.017 /spl pi/-mrad-cm (which corresponds to 1.9 eV) respectively. So far we have operated RF pulses of /spl ap/10 kW for /spl ap/50 ms with a porcelain-coated antenna and /spl ap/15 kW for /spl ap/1 s with additional layers of quartz sleeving. It is necessary to develop better antenna coating material that can withstand the intense plasma heating and sputtering in order to operate at higher power with longer pulse length.
