The requirements for optical sources used in long-haul fiber-optic communication systems are related to the characteristics of single-mode silica fibers operated at 1.55 /spl mu/m. The elementary concepts of distributed feedback (DFB) and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers are explained. Grating resonators and reflectors are described, and the theory of the frequency-selective property of corrugated gratings is explained. The detrimental consequences of the spatial hole burning phenomenon for the performance of DFB lasers are explained. Nine experimental DFB/DBR laser structures are briefly described and compared.
