How the information age will 'come of age' globally through the wireless revolution and the convergence of communications and computing, driven by digital microelectronics technology is discussed. Innovative communications networks, such as Motorola's Iridium system, are used as examples of the maturation of this revolution. The increasingly important role of semiconductors as the enabling technology platform-including microprocessors, RF, unique combinational technologies and low-power are explored, as are distinctive competencies in their design and manufacturing. Finally, the impact on the world's environment and improvement in the quality of peopole's lifestyles of this wireless revolution is highlighted.
