HandsOn: a multi-media program for bilingual language instruction of deaf children

HandsOn is educational software that uses a bilingual approach for developing the reading and Writing skills of elementary-aged deaf children. The experimental system is fully interactive, using touch (or mouse) responses and activity options that range from being extremely open-ended to tutorial in nature. The system uses laser disc technology to present a real person on screen signing American Sign Language (ASL). English text, stored on the computer, is combined on the screen with the ASL video in HandsOn. This software is not an adaptation of literacy programs designed for hearing students. Rather, it takes into account the unique language and educational needs of deaf students and their unique aptitudes.
