A structural framework is presented for analyzing end-user computing at various levels within an organization. The framework is based on the so-called user-cube, a precise and graphical taxonomy of end-users. Using a series of examples it is demonstrated how the framework can be used to develop computing profiles of individual end-users, application systems, organizational units, and the whole organization. The profiles can be hierarchically aggregated or decomposed along organizational lines, thus providing a scheme for defining the levels of analysis and a strategy for assessing the nature, extent, and impacts of end-user computing at various levels.
