The authors investigate the possibility of processing analog signals directly in delta-modulated pulse stream format. They demonstrate a class of linear operations on data represented as a ternary delta-modulated pulse stream (X/sub n/) corresponding to the analog quantity x(t). These functions make it possible to implement a set of DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms directly on the delta-modulator output data. A method for ternary delta multiplier synthesis is presented and illustrated by a DM filter example. It is concluded that the proposed multiplier can conveniently implement a FIR (finite impulse response) filter structure.
