Mass transit systems provide an attractive solution to the problems of urban sprwal, congested highways and the need to dramatically reduce pollution in many highly populated regions. Composite materials have an important role to play in expanding the marketability of new mass transit systems as a result of the many advantages these unique materials provide. For example, weight reduction is an important aspect of modern mass transit system designs, since light weight reduces maintenance costs by lowering loads on running equipment, and decreases the amount of energy required for propulsion~1. Improved system economics to procure and amortize such system. Cost reduction also significantly impacts are overall usage of mass transit systems by lowering the fare that transit authorities must charge.
