This study describes the results from a collaborative effort between material suppliers to develop fiber glass reinforcement technology for pultrusion applications. The new technology utilizes an engineered (triaxially stitched) fabric constructed from a phenolic-specific fiber glass strand. The potential for engineered fabrics to compete economically with traditional nonwoven mats has been established. The purpose of this study is to characterize the physical, mechanical, processing,a nd cost advantages of engineered fabrics in pultruded composites. The results clearly show that stronger, higher modulus, thinner, lighter weight, and cost-effective pultruded (phenolic) composites can be obtained with engineered fabrics.
