It is well known that low profile molding compounds are very difficult to internally pigment acceptably because of hazing and mottling. Simply put, hazing and mottling is a result of crosslinking of the unsaturated polyester in the presence of a low profile additive. However pre-dispersing the pigments, particularly carbon black, titanium dioxide, and zinc sulfide, in the melt minimizes hazing and mottling. Both SMC and BMC formulations along with important properties are discussed that incorporate this technology, i.e., poly(vinyl acetate) with the pigments pre-dispersed.
