Designing and engineering for the maritime industry often leads to the development of complex projects, requiring the intervention of many actors and disciplines. Project actors need to build a common understanding of projects goals and develop a collaboration model for how they may work together to reach these goals. This is challenging because actors may have very different organisational resources and limitations, as well as different ways to communicate their own practices, needs and experiences inside and across disciplines. This is important because the quality of the collaboration will directly impact the quality of the project outcomes.rnThis article explores the barriers and enablers of human collaboration in such projects, focusing on the topic of knowledge creation and transfer in the field of Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW). We discuss our preliminary design experiments on spaces, tools and processes facilitating project collaboration and how they mightrnimpact project quality.
