The inhibition effect of acridine for corrosion of hot dip Zn and Al-Zn alloy coatings in hydrochloric acid was investigated using weight loss test and quantum chemistry analysis. Weight loss measurement results indicated mat inhibition efficiency (IE%) increased with inhibitor concentration, and the highest inhibition efficiency is up to 99%. The corrosion inhibition of these coatings was discussed in terms of blocking the electrode reaction by adsorption of the molecules at the active centers on the electrode surface. It was found that the adsorption of acridine on coating surface follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm by single molecular layer. The molecule of the acridine adsorbed on the coating's surface by the style of chemical adsorption. The acridine can act as a good corrosion inhibitor for these hot dip Zn and Al-Zn alloy coatings in diluted hydrochloric acid solution.
