Currently, most Postal Operators have chosen to adopt a centralised structure for their Mail Processing Network. This approach is based on a number of interlinked Main Processing Facilities (MPF), each relying on a cluster of satellite Branch Offices. In this scenario the mail processing equipment is centralised in the MPF whereas the Branch Offices rely solely on manual sorting This scenario is able to process today's mail, however in the future, given the growing volumes and a global desire to increase the automation of the sort process through to delivery point sortation, it will no longer be the optimal solution. For this reason Mannesmann Dematic Postal Automation has designed the Mail Automated Reordering Sorter (MARS). This system is designed to provide the Postal Authorities with a cost effective sorting and mail processing solution adapted to the Branch Offices. MARS will revolutionise the way in which postal administrations operate by passing from a centralised approach to a decentralised approach, whilst spreading the workload over a longer period of time. The new functionalities of the machine will also lead to its utilisation for a longer period rather than the classic two-hour sequencing phase.
