The occurrence of corrosion in reinforced concrete in both coastal and dry areas is a universalrnproblem. Environmental conditions along with the existence of corrosive parameters will leadrnto severe corrosion in the reinforcement. In the Persian Gulf the existence of a corrosivernatmosphere along with a salt enriched soil has lead to considerable damage in the concreternstructures of the region. The vastness of the region has also added to the cost of damages.rnThese types of corrosion occur through chemical & physical mechanisms. Due to the fact thatrnmore than 80% of structural degradation in reinforced concrete is caused by reinforcementrncorrosion, it is therefore the purpose of this paper to investigate their common degradationrnmechanisms and protection techniques. The concrete samples have been evaluated for eachrntechnique, by performing standard tests such as: " Determining corrosion potential andrnInvestigation on corrosion rates and polarization diagram". Results obtained fromrnexperiments suggest that application of inhibitors in the concrete mixture is far more effectivernfor prevention of corrosion in the reinforcement and concrete workability enhancement, thanrnother prevention methods.
