CHARACTERIZATION OF CARBON ANODE MATERIALS BY IMAGE ANALYSIS

Carbon anodes are made of calcined petroleum coke, recycledrncarbon materials (butts and anodes), and coal tar pitch. The pitchrnand coke properties strongly influence the anode quality. Highqualityrnanodes help reduce the energy consumption andrnenvironmental emissions during the electrolysis. Methods havernbeen developed to characterize the structural aspects of green andrnbaked anodes, coke-pitch and biocoke-pitch samples from thernsessile-drop wettability tests as well as the solid particles ofrnvarious pitches. These methods are based on the analysis of thernimages obtained by the optical and scanning electron microscopyrntechniques. Such data help determine the possible impact onrnanode quality. Biocokes could serve as alternate raw materials forrnthe partial replacement of petroleum coke, and biocoke samplesrnwere prepared from wood by calcination at high temperatures.rnThe wetting of biocokes by pitch was compared with that ofrnpetroleum coke. This article presents the results of therncharacterization work.
