Exploitation of mineral deposits or water is often done under intensely built-up areas. Consequently, the need for reliable risk assessment of mining affected areas significantly increases. The aim of this paper is to indicate the most problematic issues concerning proper objective risk assessment of the mining areas. A new method of building damage risk assessment is described. The uncertainty and ambiguous elements in the decision process are accounted for by using a fuzzy inference system in the risk assessment model. This tool, employed together with GIS, enables one to integrate diverse factors affecting damage risk, such as surface deformations and the resistance of building objects, taking into account the data uncertainty and the subjectivity of evaluation of the experts making the assessment.
