Influence of car tyre wear and ageing on the noise emission – A pilot study

EU labelling of new tyres is made regarding their fuel efficiency, wet grip, and tyre/road noise. Tyre/road noise is measured on ISO 10844 pavement which may or may not be representative to typical Danish pavements, and the noise from new tyres may or may not be typical of the noise emission from worn tyres. In 2011 four cars were equipped with new C1 summer tyres of typical tyre lines, and their noise emission was monitored yearly on six pavements by Controlled Pass-By measurements (adapted from ISO 11819-1) until the completion of the project in 2014. A spare tyre was procured for each tyre line for reference. By the end of the project CPX measurements (ISO/CD 11819-2) were conducted on three pavements with both rear and front tyres and with the non-used spare tyres as a reference. The results indicate an increase in noise emission in the order of 1 dB when the tyres have a mileage of approx. 40.000 km and 30 % of their tread has been worn off.A larger scale project on the same topic is scheduled for 2015 – 2018 as a continuation of the ongoing NordTyre project on tyre labelling and noise emission on Nordic roads.
