Report on the results of an experiment in a quarry in the western suburbs of Boston

As support for a seismic coupling experiment involving small explosions detonatedin a quarry in the western suburbs of Boston, extensive acoustic and meteorologicaldata were collected. Signals from a quarry production ripple fire shot and from several single point explosions were obtained. To observe variations in soundpropagation due to the wind, sensors were deployed in a 'Y' configuration centeredat the quarry and radiating outwards to about 5 kilometers. In addition, sensorswere deployed in the quarry and at two small arrays, one about 6 kilometers to thewest of the quarry and the other about 26 km to the southeast. Radiosonde datacollected during the experiment to determine the atmospheric state is compared tothe Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) atmospheric profiling model. Theobtained acoustic signals are compared to propagation models based on theobtained atmospheric profiles. Effects such as directivity due to the quarry face,reverberation in the quarry and directivity due to the atmospheric winds arediscussed.
