The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the Day-Night Average Sound Level metric used in the United States with the metric used in Europe and the five variations associated with it. A report produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1974 entitled Population Distribution of the United States as a Function of Outdoor Noise Level was used for its data. This study consisted of hourly LEQ data for a full 24-hour day of measurements at 100 sites across the ten EPA regions. Using these 24-hour LEQ data, the Day-Night Average Sound Levels along with various European metrics were calculated. The differences between the various metrics were plotted and evaluated, and these differences were found to be very small and well within the margin of error for most noise predictions and also well within the uncertainty of any field measurements.
