Aircraft of a Certain Age

Aircraft structures age, with respect to fatigue and corrosion - that is certain. What is not so certain is the establishment of best practice as to what action to take and at what age to address the situation. This paper provides an overview of the guidelines for the member states of the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) recommending a common approach to continued airworthiness of aging aircraft structures. The objective of this guidance is to ensure safe operation of older airplanes throughout their remaining life in advance of rule publication in Europe. The material applies to all aircraft in commercial air transport and covers both design and maintenance. Consequently, several branches of regulations will be affected, and guidance is given to regulators, type certificate holders, operators and maintenance organizations.
