DHANSIRI - AN EXCELLENT MIDLATE MATURING SUGARCANE VARIETY FOR NORTH EAST INDIA

A promising midlate maturing sugarcane variety was developed at the Sugarcane Research Station, Buralikson from the cross Co 740 x Co 6304 through clonal selection method. The variety was rigorously tested in the state varietal trials, AICRP trials and onfarm trials in the different agroclimatic zones of Assam. The variety has shown an average cane yield of 84.18 t/ha and sugar yield of 11.03 t/ha which was 45 and 55% superior to the check variety Co 740 respectively in the plant crop condition. The ratooning ability was 23% better for cane yield and 7% better for sugar yield than the check. The variety is moderately susceptible to red rot, early shoot, top and plassy borer and moderately tolerant to waterlogging. The variety has been identified for North East India by the Central Varietal Identification Committee and recently released by the Assam State Seed Sub-Committee. The variety has become very popular in Assam and spread in entire North-East India.
