摘要

The major motivation for invation in materials in the new millennium will be not only the oppotunity to introduce a new product with a combination of advanced properties but at a cost that will permit innovation in other technological areas. One such example, materials innovation for the oil and gas industry, is described in this paper. In response to the business need for the efficient movement of gas to market, advanced linepipe technology is under development at Exxon. This technology is envisioned as substantially improving the economics of pipeline transmission of gas and thereby making long-distance transmission economically feasible. Furthermore, systems are discussed for developing advanced material technology, that utilize multi-organizational, interdisciplinary teams. Since the effective delivery of this technology is highly dependent on the cost and pace of the innovation process, this strategic approach is particularly effective in successfully transferring scientific research into a marketable product.
