Kinetic coefficients of high strength phenolic wastewater biodegradation

The kinetic coefficients of high strength phenolic wastewater biodegradation were derived from batch studies. Phenol concentrations of 50 to 1500 mg/l were used in batch growth cultures. Growth studies showed a Haldane-type kinetic response and that phenolic wastewater at high concentrations can be biodegraded. A method of nonlinear parametric estimation determined the kinetic coefficients of maximum specific growth rate, μ_(max), half-saturation constant, K_S, and inhibition constant, K_I, within the range 0.55 - 0.94 h~(-1), 50-140 mg/l phenol and 363 - 182 mg/l phenol respectively. The measured decay coefficient was 0.18 d~(-1), a value that was consistent with the literature. The stoichiometric yield coefficient measured in terms of COD was 0.26.
