A family of unified variational principles (VP) and generalized VP in aeroelasticity for the coupled 'fluid-wing' vibration system in 3-D transonic flow with shocks is developed in a systematic way via functional variations with variable domain. A novel method for incorporating initial-value conditions in, while removing final-value conditions from the VP is also suggested, eliminating the inherent defect of VP of being unable to properly handle initial-value problems. Thus, a new complete theoretical basis for the aeroelastic analysis of wing vibration (esp. flutter) and response by the finite element method is provided.
