DEVELOPMENT OF A ROAD MANAGEMENT SYSTEMUSING GPS CELLULAR PHONES FOR VOLUNTEERSUPPORT PERSONNEL

Highway administrators work around the clock to maintain safe, pleasant, and smoothrndriving conditions. To improve the efficiency of road management, we has developed arnprototype system for reporting information about road damage using GPS cellular phonesrnoperated by volunteer road management personnel. A trial was performed to evaluate thernoperability, usefulness, and effectiveness of the system in preparation for actualrnimplementation of the system. From the results, it was understood that support forrncollecting and managing road information can be achieved using commonly availablerncellular phones. This paper discusses the background and outline of the system, evaluatesrnthe effectiveness of the trial, and the directions for future activities.
