GIS TOOL APPLICATION TO IMPROVE THEISSUING OF SPECIAL DRIVING AUTHORISATIONSFOR SPECIAL VEHICLES AND TRANSPORTS

In the framework of the Euro-regional projects ARTS and SERTI, the Spanish Traffic RoadrnAdministration (DGT) developed a system to deal with the issuing of Special DrivingrnAuthorizations for special vehicles and transports of abnormal indivisible loads. The originalrnsystem has been improved adding a Geographical Information System in order to facilitate thernroute calculation and the validation of proposed routes. It is a web-based application. Thisrnpaper describes the particular characteristics of the Spanish legislation, the problems found inrnthe initial system, the architecture and structure of the new system and the advantages ofrnusing a GIS tool.
