Studies of Accident and Cost Data for Transit Buses

Accidents involving transit buses result in significant social and economic consequences. The transit IVIrnCommittee has identified the collision warning function as one of the key safety improvement measures for therntransit vehicle platform. There remains a critical need for gathering real life data that is transit specific. This paperrnpresents the transit accident and cost data from 35 California transit agencies, which cover a wide range of regionrnand operating environments, including one of the most congested areas in the United States, San Francisco Bay Area.rnThe in depth accident and cost benefit analysis confirmed the recommendation by transit IVI Committee on needsrnfor IVI technologies. It shows there is a critical need for pedestrian detection and avoidance service, which mayrntarget at one fifth of all accident costs for transit buses. It also concluded that the top five transit collision scenariosrnare, with the priority (severity) from the highest to lowest, bus rear-ending another vehicle, intersection collision,rncollision between transit buses, standing vehicle accident, and sideswipe.
