Using pulse-echo method, the defects of inspected specimens, such as cracks, inclusions, porosities et al, can be tested with ultrasonic phased array technique. Phased array transducer can realize the conversion between sound wave and electric signal, its characteristic of acoustic field is the most important factor whether the echo information of the inspected area in a specimen can be obtained and utilized effectively, and it is the main basis of designing a phased array. In this paper based on a radiating acoustic field of a rectangle piston transducer, a simple algorithm is used to simulate the acoustic field of a single rectangle piston transducer and a linear phased array transducer. By analyzing problems generated in a linear phased array design, the basic design method is provided. With an ultrasonic phased array transducer and a conventional ultrasonic transducer, the scan beam profiles of the artificial defects are compared.
