The main conclusion is that the formation of a titania-surfactant mesophase is not enough to obtain an ordered mesoporous material. The activation process is at least as important as the synthesis step in the preparation of mesoporous TiO_2. Control of the synthesis and activation steps allows to change and adjust the structural and textural properties of the resulting material. Highly-dispersed forms of titanium dioxide are interesting for many applications in which the extent of the interface between TiO_2 and other species is an important parameter.
